Ramatuelle – the camperstop alternative to St. Tropez

take heed!

After 3 nights on Les Colombiers it was time to move on a bit further so we made a beeline for Juan-les-Pins to park on the road by the beach for the day.  There were signs up banning tents, but ‘vans appeared to be in the clear – wrong!  We’d just had a coffee and got settled outside with our books (sorry John, Kindle!), along with 2 or 3 other couples a bit further along, when a couple of Gendarmes pulled up and told us that we must park “2kms along up there”, which they knew was impossible because of height barriers, yet the cars were not moved on. It was impossible to find anywhere all along this stretch to park a ‘van, presumably because they think they have a better class of clientele in the cars. If my French had been up to it I would have challenged them, but I thought we should move rather than risk spending the night behind French bars!  We carried on along the small coast road and found a huge camperstop just past St.Tropez at Ramatuelle, about 50mts from the sandy beach, so a couple of nights here was called for.

Oh dear, I’ve woken up another year older! One has to make the best of a bad job though doesn’t one, so after an hour’s sunbathing – far too hot for any longer – it was back to the ‘van for coffee and a cool shower before going back down to the beach for a fabulous lunch at a shabby-chic restaurant, where dress code seemed to be swimsuit and sarong whilst tableware and food was Michelin star standard (although they don’t have one).  After lunch we were on the road again, but not for long because it was so damned hot; about 40kms on we found a large layby complete with shady trees, near Le Lavandou, so we’d found our halt for the night.
