We were all set to move on by about 8.45 a.m., but we found the exit blocked by a haphazard queue of market gardeners who were waiting for the wholesaler to open, at 9 a.m. It was an interesting sight and worth the holdup to see the various vehicles, cars, pick-ups, vans, tractors and trailers, each piled high with one variety only of fruit or vegetable, all top quality from what we saw, the growers presumably hoping to get a good price when the gates opened. We’d fancied the idea of staying on an Agriturismo in Italy last year because we’d heard that their food is very good, but didn’t manage it, so today we went looking for one that we’d seen in our camperstop book as being (roughly) on our route. We were driving where the SatNav told us to go until we saw another one signposted on the roadside which was closer, so off we went with SatNav insisting we “make a U turn when possible” until I switched it off; not many days pass when it doesn’t get a chance to shout that one out!
and Hello Italy! at Agriturismo Maseria
Five minutes later we arrived at Agriturismo Maseria at Cardilli, about 50kms north of Napoli. It’s a buffalo breeding farm, specialising in making mozzarella and they also run a very good b&b, more like a hotel and allowed us to stay in the ‘van in the restaurant carpark.. There’s a large pool set in landscaped gardens, where we spent most of the rest of the day until the rain came down. We had their mozzarella and proscuitio at lunchtime, but they were bigger than tennis balls and both served with 4 large slices of ham and homemade bread and that was just the antipasto, so we couldn’t do justice to the full menu, finishing on the next course which was a pasta served with a delicious meat and provolone sauce. We nearly had to roll back to the poolside after just those 2 courses. We managed to sleep that night, even though our ‘van was parked up the side of a building which had a pump going all night.
