At Montpellier we found a coachpark for the ‘van and stayed overnight there. A big, touristy town with plenty to see; we did a tour on the Petit Train, even though Antonio is not with us! I was delighted to be able to get a theatre ticket for the evening, as it’s the Montpellier Danse festival this week, but it was not at all what I’d expected and I was thoroughly disappointed in it and really pleased that I’d not dragged John along!
Carcassonne
It’s Carcassonne today, another place I’ve wanted to see for ages and an article I read before we left heightened my interest. It didn’t disappoint, as I hope the photos convey; I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if Eleanor of Aquitaine had poked her head out of one the windows of the castle’s many turrets! The one disappointment was the cassoulet we had for lunch as we chose a restaurant carefully and then found that their “recette maison” was pork and beans thrown together, not even slowly but in a hurry, without a sniff of the canard which would have given it some flavour! Our next stop was to be Mazamet or Castres as they were both listed as having good aires, however we made the mistake of handing over navigation to SatNav, who led us through a very twisting, very hilly, forest road which bypassed Mazamet altogether and eventually brought us back out into the daylight, just before Castres, at a small town called Labrugiere where stayed overnight on the sports ground carpark.
